This course is a survey of American civilization, which focuses on major political, social, economic and cultural issues that shaped the history of United States of America from the arrival of the first immigrants in the continent notably the Indians during the Ice age up to modern time. It principally tackles periods of prosperities and agitations as well as the emergence of movements of change and progress that developed during the above mentioned time span. Furthermore, it is designed to provide an analysis of major problems and developments bearing on the history of the colonial and post colonial eras.

Following a timeline of events, it emphasizes on major themes in United States’ history that are presented chronologically such as the origins of the different waves of immigration that moved to the continent at different periods of time, the imposition of colonial rule, the transfer of power to Americans after the American War of Independence during the late eighteen century, the aggravation of tension between the two conflicting sections notably north-south and the roots to the civil war, the evolution of the United States’ financial, agricultural and industrial institutions during the late nineteenth century up to the beginning of the next century… In addition, it is meant to help students learn about important events that have shaped the character of the people of the United States of America and the policies of their government.
