Dr. Arab. L1.S1.Culture and Civilisation
This module aims to introduce first year Bachelor’s students to the British Culture and Civilisation. The course has different objectives; the first aims at activating and reinforcing students’ prior knowledge about the United Kingdom in terms of location, population, area, language, religion, etc. The second is to provide students with a basic body of knowledge about the British culture through the study of their symbols, history, and political as well as educational institutions. The course is also expected to help them understand their own culture by drawing a comparison between the UK and Algeria with reference to the cultural aspects discussed in the different lectures. In this respect, William Little and Ron McGivern (2014) state that: “The more we study another culture, the better we become at understanding our own”
Another important objective is to enhance students’ language skills; to urge students to read, they are provided with the lectures’ handouts beforehand as reading assignments. Students are then required to read these handouts and do the homework at the end of each lecture to prepare for classroom discussion. They are also invited to check the different sources of the lectures and the suggested sources for further reading, again to practice their reading skills and to build and widen their knowledge about the studied subjects.
